Many Centuries ago Pictish Society somehow managed to survive, indeed flourish.
Their monumental carved stones, left to us, bear testimony to the supportive infrastructure that enabled their Artist/Craftsmen to enhance the Pictish world and indeed ours now.
I have experienced many of the challenges faced by Artist /Craftsmen over my working life and am acutely aware of the tension twixt creative drive and commercial viability.
A supportive environment can be crucial.
In the long term, however, imaginative approaches coupled with a foundation in traditional skills and techniques are key to survival.
Paul Mowbray’s work exemplifies this, and he, as such, deserves recognition for his demonstrable talents.
I stress the plural as it is rare to find such a width of skills, knowledge and experience.
From the Archaic to the Contemporary his conscientious and discerning approach is always in evidence.
Carving; Sculpture; Painting; Fine Cabinet making; Lettering… the list goes on.
How I envy this man’s capacity.
I entreat those who can to support him, enabling as our Pictish forbears did, work which will inspire and delight, hopefully giving some the ambition to become the Artist / Craftsmen of the future.

"I have known Paul for many years having worked with him during my time in Scotland. Paul is a highly skilled artisan and craftsman and will be happy to hear from anyone who has an art project in mind. I know his standards and am confident you will be pleased with both him as a person and in the quality of his work."
